In order to be a successful at using UDL guidelines a teacher must be able to adjust their methodology to accommodate their learning disabled student needs.
There are various methods a teacher can use in order for their students to be successfull in their classroom.
Remember that Methods used in your classroom are used for; individual achievement of the learning disabled child, Individualized learning of assignments and concepts, and the individual progress of learning of the learning disabled student.
Methods to use in your classroom?
Scaffolding - start with a rigorous instruction, then allow the child to ease into the strategies they need to learn by providing them with mediated instruction.
Direct Instruction - Although direct instruction is useful, a student with a learning disability may need s different method that follows the UDL guidelines in order for them to grasp upon a concept. When performing direct instruction it is important to follow the students IEP plan (if one is in place) and to provide with with manipulatives, or pair up with a partner is needed.
UDL - A teacher can use UDL guidelines to provide means of representation, action/expression,and engagement for the student.
Modeling - A teacher can provide a visual guide and follow-along for students who need to visual representation. By modeling an activity, classroom rules, expectation we can demonstrate what and how something is to be done int he classroom environment.
Providing students with choices - A method of teaching is to allow the child to be provided with many choices for their assignment. During arts integration lessons students can be allowed to use many mediums to create what they like. For example, if a group must create a play the teacher can provide students with the choice of what instruments they want to use or how they want their play be designed. We could also give a student an assignment, and allow different choices of how they are to complete it. For example if a student had to compare and contrast two characters in a story, we could allow them to crate a poem, an essay, a play, a painting, etc.
